Community Spotlight: The Legacy of Dentistry in our Community
Two local dentists are continuing the legacy of promoting good dental health in the Washington Street area, building on the foundation laid by dentists who provided care to our community for generations.
Carl P. Little, DDS is a second-generation dentist, following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Perry Little, who established his dental practice on Washington Street in 1948. Dr. Carl Little’s dental office is located at 628 Washington Street, just about a block from where his father’s dental office was located when he first set up.
As Dr. Little describes it, his father started his business in a two-story building that was closer to the current location of Becky’s and Mary’s Restaurant, and he started with just “one barber’s chair and a light bulb.” At that time, dental extractions were just 75 cents.
In 1997, Dr. Carl Little joined his father’s dental practice, and they worked together until the senior Dr. Little retired in 2000.
Dr. Little is currently accepting new patients and accepts most insurance plans. His office provides a wide range of dental treatments for clients from 8 years old and up, including basic services like cleanings and fillings as well as some root canals.
He also specializes in fitting and maintaining full and partial dentures. Dr. Little’s words of wisdom to patients of all ages is to “floss as often as you can, and brush twice a day.”

Herbert L. McNeal, Jr., DDS is the founder of Phoenix Dental of High Point, located at 319 University Parkway, across the street from Legacy Ridge, in what was formerly the Daniel Brooks community. Dr. McNeal practiced dentistry in Greensboro for over 20 years before relocating to the Washington Street community.
Dr. McNeal’s practice is in the location formerly occupied by Dr. Benjamin Williams, who opened his dental office at the 319 location in 1973, and served the community there until he retired in 2008. Working together, Dr. Williams and Dr. McNeal renovated the space to allow Dr. McNeal to establish his practice there, returning a much-needed service to the area.
Dr. McNeal encourages good dental health because “a lot of times, we are not taking care of our mouths, and it affects other systems in the body.” For that reason, he states, “we are focused on educating and making you healthy . . .”
Dr. McNeal’s wholistic approach to dentistry focuses on hygiene as well as healing and restoring teeth, whenever possible, by providing fillings and crowns. Dr. McNeal does some extractions and root canals, as well as providing full and partial dentures and emergency care.
Phoenix Dental of High Point is also accepting new patients, ages 3 years and older and accepts juvenile Medicaid as well as a variety of insurances for adults. The office is open Tuesday through Thursday from 8 am until 5 pm and Friday until 2 pm.
